Resolved Question: Am I getting addicted?

I've been taking a medication for a while now ( a few years). It's called clonazepam and it's like valium I think. I started taking because I have a big fear of flying and suffer from lots of anxiety. I don't think I'm addicted but I'm not sure. I was taking about 2 pills maybe 3 times a week some of the time when I first started it a few years back, but then I went for long periods of time like a couple of months recently where I didn't take it. My new doctor wouldn't give me any within a couple of months and said it's addictive and not to take it more than once a week if needed. My old doc would just keep giving me scripts every few weeks. But I'm about to move from NZ to Aus, and last time I lived over there (for 6 months) the doc I saw gave me 100 tablets!! My old doc only ever gave me 15 at a time!! I felt really guilty having that many cos I was worried I would get addicted so I tipped them down the sink. But the urge was there, and still is. I want to take it so often, but my conscience makes me stop. I feel though like it could be really easy to slip, but maybe im stronger that that. Do I sound like I could be addicted? more

Resolved Question: Does it make sense that Marijuana is a Schedule 1 Drug and Cocaine is a Schedule 2 Drug?

Schedule I — drugs with a high abuse risk. These drugs have NO safe, accepted medical use in the United States. Some examples are heroin, marijuana, LSD, PCP, and crack cocaine. Schedule II — drugs with a high abuse risk, but also have safe and accepted medical uses in the United States. These drugs can cause severe psychological or physical dependence. Schedule II drugs include certain narcotic, stimulant, and depressant drugs. Some examples are morphine, cocaine, oxycodone (Percodan®), methylphenidate (Ritalin®), and dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine®). more

Resolved Question: Meth is a Schedule II drug?

Recently in my town a woman was arrested for Meth, and the arrest report in the newspaper said " possession of Schedule II drug." I thought this was weird because Schedule I includes the drugs that have no accepted medical use, and I cannot think of any reason why meth (or as meth as I know it to be) would have any medical use. So I looked up the Pharmaceutical chapter in one of my text books (I'm a nursing student.. which is why I SHOULD know this) and not only did it confirm that meth is indeed a Schedule II, but street drugs like Xanax, Valium, and Placidyl are Schedule IV drugs.. and last I heard, Placidyl was taken off the market many years ago due to an excessive number of overdose deaths/adverse effects. My textbook was published in 2008 or 2009 so at first I thought maybe it has been updated, but apparently nothing has changed and I'm very confused. Please answer? Thank you! more

Resolved Question: Do you agree/disagree to how the U.S. Govt Schedules Drugs Worst to Good?? (list provided)?

Before some over read into this, my point is everybody likes to discuss how marijuana is the gateway drug, but when you label marijuana in the same category as heroine, crack cocaine, LSD, and PCP do you not think that once kids smoke weed that they will not know your lying about it's harmful affects and then think maybe they're lying about the rest of the drugs and then start sampling them too? Canada labels Marijuana in the schedule II category not with crack and the other hardcore drugs. Do you agree with how the U.S. categorizes this drug just as harmful? Schedule III, IV, or V — drugs with an abuse risk less than Schedule II. These drugs also have safe and accepted medical uses in the United States. Schedule III, IV, or V drugs include those containing smaller amounts of certain narcotic and non-narcotic drugs, anti-anxiety drugs, tranquilizers, sedatives, stimulants, and non-narcotic analgesics. Some examples are acetaminophen with codeine (Tylenol® No.3), paregoric, hydrocodone with acetaminophen (Vicodin®), diazepam (Valium®), alprazolam (Xanax®), propoxyphene (Darvon®), and pentazocine (Talwin®).I'm not implying they know about the categorizing but I'm saying D.A.R.E. and other teachers ie especially my medical teacher, like to teach that marijuana is as bad as cocaine and this is where they are disbelieving in what their parents or teachers saying once they try it, so now they have the mistrust in their parents and teachers that they believe maybe cocaine isn't as bad as they are telling me. more

Resolved Question: Is Marijuana Physically Addictive?

I have been having dialog with my brother who thinks anyone who smokes marijuana is just a waste case. And that they could not, nor would not be able to quit. I need some documentation to back up my claim... that while we may "want" to smoke, we don't "need" to smoke. Subtle difference, but I'll take it. more

Resolved Question: Quitting marijuana while depressed?

I started smoking marijuana heavily shortly after being diagnosed with depression. I think I did it mainly because it was the only thing I enjoyed anymore -- I used to have hobbies and stuff but now it all just seems like a chore and I don't enjoy any of it. That and it helped with all the negative thoughts; I could either stay at home crying all day or smoke a little, go for a walk, and enjoy life and how beautiful it was. Also it helped with my appetite and the minor aches & pains. Now my doctor wants me to quit. I really don't want to stop smoking pot but none of the antidepressants my doctor has tried have worked, and she says it will be easier to treat me if I stop smoking. I've researched how to quit and everyone says that the best way is to distract yourself by doing something you enjoy. But there is nothing that I enjoy. To make it worse, everyone I know smokes pot (well, everyone who is less than 15 years older than me). I've been drug-free for a few days now and I'm absolutely miserable, and all I can think about is how miserable I am and how I can't leave the house or eat or even get out of bed for more than an hour. Has anyone ever tried to quit pot while depressed? How can you do it? more

Resolved Question: Opinions on anti-depressants?

Resolved Question: Is paxil (paroxetine) safer than prozac (fluoxetine)?

I heard prozac was the safest of all anti-depressants but they other day I switched from prozac to paxil and expected the effects to be stronger and I heard paxil was notorious for withdrawal symptoms but I found prozac much stronger. Prozac gave me a feeling not dissimilar to ecstasy whereas paxil has almost no effect at all on me, also prozac made me grind my teeth and gave me a somewhat euphoric like feeling but I thought paxil was supposed to be stronger and more addictive, should I be feeling something of this new drug or not? more

Do not confuse "abuse" with "dependence." Most folks think it's no big deal if they take anti-depressants, cholesterol lowering drugs or high-blood pressure medications every day (dependence).
